Paladin Construction just wrapped up an exterior restoration project on beautiful St. Alexander Church and buildings in Port Edwards, WI. The church had an aging roof, and was experiencing algae growth issues on the shingles which caused a "streaky" appearance. When a July 2014 thunderstorm battered the buildings with hail, the board asked Paladin to help. Travis Kielpikowsi of Paladin strapped into a climbing harness to navigate the incredibly steep roof, while checking the condition of the shingles. He discovered extensive hail damage, which wasn't easily visible from the ground. He recommended to the board that they file a no-fault claim with their insurance company. Travis, and Jason D., the field manager for Paladin met with an adjuster sent by the insurance company to determine the extent of damages. The guys provided the adjuster with detailed photos of damages located in high and steep areas that were difficult to access. They advised him of the necessary steps to restore the venerable old church to it's pre-storm condition. The insurance company agreed to replace all of the damaged roofs and metal accessories on the church and rectory, educational building, and garage, and to take any additional steps to make the roof compliant to newer code requirements. Paladin secured permits and scheduled the project with the board, helping them to select a distinctive designer shingle that compliments the stonework and fits with the unique character of the buildings. The expert crews demolished the old roofs and installed the new roofs in about 7 working days. The Church is directly across the street from a playground, and is located in a quiet neighborhood on the Wisconsin River. Paladin's master installers kept a safe and tidy site throughout the project duration. Curious neighbors stopped often to watch the men at work, and marvelled at their efficiency and craftsmanship. St. Alexander looks like new, without losing any of it's unique historic charm - at zero cost to the parish!

Always check carefully to make certain you're using local contractors. Many times, after an area experiences a damaging storm, contractors from other states will set up "local" branch offices nearby. Once all of the homes in the area have been approached and/or repaired, these companies will move on to greener pastures, following storms around the country, maybe leaving an empty office and phone-line behind in case they need to return for another storm. These companies use transient labor, and are notoriously difficult or impossible to communicate with for workmanship warranty coverage. Your home is likely the most important thing your family owns, and entrusting it's health to a contractor is a big deal. Below are items to look at while making certain you are using the right contractor.
Things to check when selecting a contractor -
A. State Dwelling Contractor Certification
B. Insurance, current and sufficient for 5 million in coverage
C. Check online, search the company in Google to see if they are headquartered in another state, or have "branches" in multiple states.
D.Check with the Better Business Bureau - it's free, and you can see the grade of a company along with any history of complaints. Accredited businesses are the most proven and trustworthy. http://wisconsin.bbb.org/consumers/
E. Check the Driver's License or State ID of any representative approaching you offering services, make sure the name on the picture ID matches the business card, and that they are not from another state.
F. Check local references, homeowners who have worked with the company.Local business references are a good idea as well.
G. Work they've done on projects similar to yours - before and after pictures, references to make sure they have the necessary relevant experience to take care of your home.
